ABSTRACT: El Niño occurred in the Central Pacific area between 2015 and 2016. This event has caused changes in the distribution patterns and abundance of some fishery resources in the Peruvian sea and the environmental conditions of the benthodemersal subsystem on the continental shelf, which favored the latitudinal shift of the Peruvian hake population. Its distribution was expanded from 10°S (which is the usual distribution area for the species, under neutral conditions) towards southern Peru. This study reports the bycatch of Peruvian hake by artisanal fisheries (purse-seine and gillnetting) on the continental shelf off Arequipa Region (16°42.5’S) between April 2016 and July 2017. We estimated that the hake population remained in southern Peru from autumn 2016 to winter 2017, under favorable habitat conditions caused by the occurrence of EN 2015-2016 and the 2017 coastal El Niño off the Peruvian coast. |
