ABSTRACT: Between February and March 2014, evaluations were carried out at the Lobos de Tierra Island pilot site, where four sectors were delimited on two fronts: (a) the exposed front of the island (S1 and S2) and (b) the protected island front (S3 and S4). The stratified sampling design was applied considering strata of zonation for the intertidal and strata every five meters of depth for the shallow subtidal. Three to nine sampling stations were established for each sector, georeferenced with a GPS and the Provisional Datum WGS84. The total sampling effort was 310 quadrant-replicates. All the macrobenthic fauna was collected per quadrant with techniques of semi-autonomous diving in the subtidal and beach trips in the intertidal. We compared observed richness in each sector with expected richness using non-parametric estimators. ANOVAs based on permutations were applied. Shannon (H) and Simpson (D) indexes were determined per sample and mean values were determined by stratum by sector. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Bray-Curtis similarity matrices were used to characterize habitats at the strata level by sector. We identified 170 taxa in the intertidal and 309 in the shallow subtidal. With the non-parametric estimators we determined values of richness close to what was observed in sectors S3 and S4 where the curves of accumulation of species had asymptotic behavior. The low number of singleton species confirmed the efficiency of the sampling methodology. High values of richness and diversity were presented in the infralitoral of the intertidal and between strata 3 and 4 (10-20 m) of the subtidal. The percentages of abundant and highly abundant species were only high in sectors S1 and S2, ratifying them as areas with more homogeneous distribution in terms of abundance. In the intertidal there are no significant differences between the hard and soft substrate sectors (<0.050) but in the shallow subtidal (ANOVA). Considering the effects between sectors by stratum and between strata by sector, significant differences were found in the sandy and rocky substrate sectors at the middle and infralittoral level and between the strata of greater depth (10 and 20 m) (Permanova). Differences in the structure of communities according to the sector and of the stratum with the multidimensional computer (NMDS) in 2D scale were corroborated, reflecting the distance between the communities of the supra, middle and infralittoral strata, and strata between 0-10 m and 10-20 m. The protected front of the island, at the north end has extensive sandy beaches and broken shells with little pronounced profiles, at the south end were small cliffs projected towards the sea with platforms and rocky blocks were found. The exposed front, at the north and south ends, is formed by cliffs with platforms and rocky blocks, which in the subtidal were covered by patches of boulder and pebble in the first two strata. The main aggregates of structurers in the intertidal were composed of green macroalgaes Caulerpa filiformis Hering, 1841; red macroalgaes Ahnfeltiopsis sp., Corallina officinalis Linnaeus, 1758, Rhodymenia sp., unidentified species of the Rhodophyta group; macroalgae brown Colpomenia sp., Eisenia cokeri Howe, 1914; mussels Semimytilus algosus (Gould, 1850), Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819); cirripids Jehlius cirratus (Darwin, 1854), Notochthamalus scabrosus (Darwin, 1854) and the polychaetes Cirratulidae, Spionidae, Orbiniidae and Nephtys imprinted Baird, 1873. In the subtidal area the green macroalgae C. filiformis; red macroalgae Chondracanthus sp., Gracilaria sp., Ahnfeltiopsis sp., Rhodymenia sp.; brown algae E. cokeri; cirripids Austromegabalanus sp., Balanus laevis Bruguière, 1789; tunicates Pyura chilensis Molina, 1782; Polychaetes Diopatra sp., Nereis sp., Terebellidae, Hesionidae, Eunicidae, Cirratulidae, Spionidae, Serpulidae, Lumbrineridae and Syllidae. At the northern end of the exposed front of the island, between 5 and 20 m stood out the presence of gorgonids.
